London’s Great Outdoors

London’s Great Outdoors is the Mayor’s ambitious programme to transform the public places we live in – high streets, town centers, parks, rivers and pathways – into vibrant, loved places within our city.

Since the programme began in 2009, over £130m has been invested in over 57 projects, divided into two key areas – better green and water spaces and better streets.

It has been a great success.  The programme boasts some amazing transformations, such as one of the most innovative and grand shared space streetscape at Exhibition Road; England's largest manmade bouldering complex at Fairlop Park; a vibrant community garden and event space at Dalston Eastern Curve; a new focal point for culture, entertainment and relaxation at Windrush Square in Brixton; and wider footways and removal of street furniture in Orpington town centre.  These improvements, and sometimes the complete reimagining of a space, and many more, all help to make our public spaces more pleasurable areas in which to stroll, shop, cycle, walk the dog or take the family for a fun day out.

Have a look at our galleries for before-and-after photos of fantastic spaces we’ve transformed, and ones we’re developing right now.  Also have a look by area or on our map.
