We're making London's homes more energy efficient through RE:NEW

We want to improve the energy efficiency of homes across London to reduce CO2 emissions and Londoners’ fuel bills.

RE:NEW - a dedicated programme for homes in London

RE:NEW is a pan-London scheme designed to make it easier for all householders to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and, as a result, make homes warmer, cut fuel bills and lower CO2 emissions across London.

The scheme applies to all types of homes across London, including owner occupied, privately rented and social housing.

It is a whole-house approach that aims to offer something for every resident in targeted areas in the 32 participating boroughs.

Homes are the biggest emitters of CO2 in London – around 36% of London’s CO2 emissions come from London’s homes.

With RE:NEW, householders are given energy efficiency advice and have simple energy efficiency improvements installed for free throughout the home. It includes a range of easy measures provided and installed at no cost, such as energy display devices, radiator panels, aerated taps and showerheads, hot water tank jackets and draught-proofing.

The aim is that more substantial steps, such as loft and cavity wall insulation, will also involve no upfront costs, be free for those on benefits and subsidised for those able to pay.

RE:NEW is a partnership between the Mayor of London, London Councils, the Energy Saving Trust and 32 London boroughs.

RE:NEW offer

All residents living in a RE:NEW area will be eligible to receive the following package for free:

  • A full home energy survey carried out by a qualified RE:NEW Home Energy Advisor. This takes roughly 90 minutes.
  • Tailored energy and water saving advice during the visit to help you save up to £154 on annual energy and water bills.
  • A tailor-made energy saving report once the visit is complete.
  • A range of free energy saving devices.
  • Benefit entitlement and tax credit assessment.

Measures on offer during the visit may include:

  • Low energy light bulbs
  • Tap aerators
  • Radiator panels
  • Stand-by switches
  • Energy display monitor
  • Water efficient showerhead
  • Hot water tank Insulation
  • Draught-proofing
  • Save-a-flush toilet devices
  • Shower timer

Please note that the individual measures vary from borough to borough.

The survey will also investigate whether other energy efficiency measures such as loft, cavity and solid wall insulation, or renewable energy measures, could be installed to improve energy efficiency further. In cases where immediate potential is identified, you will have a booking or referral made at the same time as the initial visit. If the measures need to be installed further in the future, for example when new financing options are available, you can register your interest and request to be contacted again at the appropriate time.

If you need further measures to be installed, the Home Energy Advisor will consider your eligibility for national funding sources such as the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) and Warm Front, as well as local borough grant schemes.*

* All grants and discounts are subject to funding, eligibility criteria and a technical survey.

At the same time as improving energy efficiency, RE:NEW aims to reduce fuel poverty in London. Each Home Energy Advisor will carry out a benefits check and ensure residents are claiming all of the benefits and grants they are entitled to.

London boroughs are responsible for managing RE:NEW projects locally and for appointing an agent to carry out the surveys on their behalf.
