Advice and Support for Community Groups
Planning ahead is important to the success of your clean-up. A number of organisations have produced advice and support to help you plan your own clean-up. This page pulls together some of the available information to help make your clean-up successful, safe, rewarding and great fun.
Health and Safety
Health and safety is extremely important. It’s essential that when you organise a project that you are aware of your legal responsibilities. You should consider health and safety early on in your planning and it is important and strongly recommended that you:
- carry out a full risk assessment to identify safety issues and potential hazards
- ensure your event is covered by public liability insurance
- properly induct your volunteers, introducing them to the project and what is expected of them
- have a qualified first aider present and
- ensure that volunteers wear appropriate protective clothing

We have two designs for you to choose from: one is our official campaign poster and the other uses the 2010 poster competition’s winning design. See the poster designs at the bottom of the page.
We recommend that you put up posters in accessible community spaces with permission of the owner of the premises, such as: local shops / supermarkets, in libraries, community and leisure centres, Citizens Advice Bureaux, schools and community notice boards. Please do not put up the posters illegally, without permission or as junk mail.

The London 2012 Changing Places toolkit provides guidance on health and safety considerations including risk assessments, activity supervision, and first aid. It also has an example risk assessment form that you may wish to use.
The Big Tidy Up website provides advice on organising litter clearing events, including event planning, event management, publicising your event, health and safety considerations, waterside clean-ups, equipment and recycling of litter collected.
The Litter Action Information Centre contains all of the information you will need to organise your own litter pick, from how to fund your group and whether to purchase liability insurance to where to purchase equipment. Also you can read up on some of the background of the laws surrounding litter and fly-tipping.
BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) provides group insurance covering a wide range of groups carrying out environmental conservation activities. Additional insurance can also be obtained for project tools. Insurance includes a community network joining fee, which entitles groups to advice, discounted tools and newsletters.
