Skills for the 21st century

The global economy of the 21st century will demand high level skills and capabilities. The London Skills and Employment Board is committed to helping make sure London develops them. The LSEB's strategy sets out our three main aims. Delivery partners lead on the implementation of these:

  • We will work more closely with employers.
  • We will provide better support to Londoners.
  • We will create a skills and employment system that is fully integrated and customer-focused.

The London Skills and Employment Board is committed to continuing to work with partners to develop the skills London needs. We will help employers improve jobs and skills opportunities. We will help them and public agencies spread good practice and deliver better support. And we'll listen harder to make sure we're giving support that really meets employers' needs.

We will help Londoners develop their skills, raise aspirations, and make help and support more understandable and accessible. We will encourage and coordinate, bringing together government, funding agencies and service providers to achieve efficient and coherent delivery.

We will help Londoners – particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds – develop the skills London needs, both for them and for London itself.

Two-year snapshot: what we've delivered so far

Apprenticeships not only provide access to skilled employment but they also prepare businesses to recover from the recession with highly skilled and motivated staff. The Mayor has formally called on London businesses to take on more apprentices. There are now 350 apprentices expected to work on the Olympics development alone, up to 1,000 expected to work on Crossrail and a further 1,000 to work across the GLA with 75% of these in place by March 2010. Read more about how we are encouraging apprenticeships in London.
