Project Titan
Character building for young people
Project Titan calls for more emphasis in developing what used to be known as ‘character’ in young people, and uniformed youth groups under the ‘YOU London’ banner, such as the Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC), Community Fire Cadets, Scouts, Girl Guiding or the Air Training Corps have proved they can make a real difference.
We have been working with the YOU London partnership to raise awareness of their members’ work and back their call for more adult volunteers – the current factor limiting their expansion across London. Over 2010 we will be launching a campaign to increase the numbers of adult volunteers and young leaders, as well as encouraging more sharing of facilities and local resources across the capital.
The Metropolitan Police have been working to increase membership in the Volunteer Police Cadets from their current number of 1,500 to a target of 4,000 across London by 2012. We are also supporting the London Fire Brigade’s Community Fire Cadets, a comprehensive 18-month scheme aimed at young people aged 14 to 18 that is currently operational in three London boroughs.
Wanted positive role models - Mentoring for black boys
Young Londoners need positive role models and more structured activities that will help build character, self-esteem and responsibility. The Mayor wants to do more for young black boys – who we know are at greater risk of becoming involved in violence – and is calling on more black men to step up and act as mentors and role models. A new high profile campaign is highlighting this need.
As part of the Mayor’s broader push to tackle the root causes of youth violence in London, a Mayoral ambassador will be appointed to lead the call for more black mentors, as well as promoting positive masculinity and fathering for black boys in London.
The Mayor believes that volunteers have an important role to play in creating positive and lasting change in our communities. Mentoring is a highly effective and rewarding way to volunteer and the Mayor has put mentoring at the heart of plans to tackle some of the critical issues facing young people in London.

Heavyweight influencers of the course of events in early Greek mythology, this prodigious family of giants included Themis, goddess of good council and organiser of the communal affairs of humans.
