Mayor's Scholars

The Mayor’s Scholars programme seeks to support children in care throughout their educational career, whether they are in school, college or university.

Helping children in care reach their potential

By giving extra support to children in care and championing their achievements, we want to raise the self-belief and aspirations of this group of young Londoners, as well as the expectations of the teachers and social workers who work with them.  We are delivering the programme through four activities:

  • A ‘near peer’ mentoring scheme: we are running a pilot to train up care leavers who are presently at university to mentor children in care from Hackney, Islington, and Kensington & Chelsea.
  • The ‘Wise Up’ children in care pathways events: the first is taking place at Kings College London on 13 February.  This event seeks to draw out the aspirations of young Londoners and raise young people’s awareness of pathways to successful education and training positions. The event is being delivered in partnership with Action for Children, Barnardos and the Aim Higher Partnership.
  • A series of multi agency practitioner seminars: starting April 2010 we are hosting seminars for people who work with children in care to build understanding across sectors / professions.
