Through our strategy The Way Forward and the initiatives that flow from it, we are determined to do everything we can to put an end to violence against women and to support and empower women and girls to escape violence.
Improving the way we tackle violence against women
Leading the way forward
"For too long, the lives of too many women have been affected by violence. The Mayor and I are both committed to improving how London responds to victims."
"In order to understand better where the gaps in services are, we have commissioned the End Violence Against Women Coalition to analyse the current support services for women affected by violence. This will help inform our work to tackle violence against women as set out in our strategy - The Way Forward. By working with a wide range of partners we can take immediate action to revolutionise how London responds to violence against women."
Kit Malthouse, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime
Violence against women affects everyone in London. It is linked to higher levels of child poverty, increased levels of substance abuse and costs the city approximately £5.6bn a year.
Last year the number of reported rapes in the capital increased by 14.5% and domestic violence incidents rose by 4.4%. Yet only an estimated 10% of women who have been raped or sexually assaulted report it to the police and only 6% of all rape cases end in a conviction.
By implementing our strategy and working closely with all concerned we intend to take tougher action to end violence against women in London.
There is four times more rape crisis provision in London, with three new centres now open.
