Mayor's Safer Parks Award 2012

Each year we celebrate London's best parks, and the work that goes into making them safer for everyone.

We have been inviting nominations/applications for the Mayor's Safer Parks Awards 2012. Applications were assessed using standard performance data provided by applicants. This included factors such as the levels and community perception of crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the park, including details of any surveys conducted.

How to apply

The application period for the Safer Parks Award 2012 closed on 31 January 2012. Whilst the awards are no longer open, we appreciate some applications or supporting information may be late in arriving due to unforeseen circumstances. If this is the case please email saferparks@london.gov.uk to request an extension.

Applicants will be informed during February whether they have been successful. Awards will be distributed at a ceremony at City Hall on Monday 27 February.

Is your local park a welcome haven for the whole community?

Safer parks are those that are well used by everyone in the community and bring lasting benefits; including a reduced fear and incidence of anti-social behaviour and crime.

Safer Parks Awards 2012

The Mayor’s Safer Parks Award recognises and promotes new and existing good practice in tackling ASB and increasing safety in London’s parks.

A key part is community involvement and the Award acknowledges the role local people and organisations can have in making a truly successful park.

All our Award winners have residents who care about their park and are willing to be involved in identifying and tackling problems. Local groups have made a great contribution - picking litter, raising funds, running consultation events and organising community fun-days. The wide range of activity that can go towards making a safer park is what makes this award unique.

The awards recognise good practice in:

  • tackling a specific problem of ASB and/or crime
  • challenging public perception that a specific park is unsafe
  • encouraging greater use, and enjoyment, of parks
  • increasing and supporting community action to improve safety in London’s parks.

The award is not only a standard to meet, but also a measure and acknowledgement of improvement. The community should be fully involved in the identification and resolution of any issues and concerns.

If you have any questions on the scheme email saferparks@london.gov.uk
