Low carbon London

We're working hard to build London's low carbon economy of the future.

Low carbon London

We're working hard to make London a leading low carbon capital. Developing a low carbon economy will help us mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. It will also help ensure London remains competitive as a leading global city in the 21st century.

Addressing climate change

The Mayor has set an ambitious target in his draft Climate Change Mitigation and Energy Strategy to reduce London’s carbon emissions by 60% by 2025. To achieve this, we have already developed a number of low carbon programmes to address climate change.

Private sector investment is key

The ultimate success of these programmes will mean ensuring enough private sector investment to deliver them at the speed and scale necessary. As a world financial centre, London is in a great position to make this happen.

Working in partnership

We are working with London Councils, and other public bodies as well as national government and European institutions to reduce London's carbon emissions. Through RE:CONNECT we are working with London boroughs to deliver ten low carbon neighbourhoods. We are aiming to deliver energy retrofitting measures to 200,000 homes by 2012. Through RE:FIT, we are working with public bodies to make their buidings more energy efficient.

Generating energy as well as saving it

The draft Climate Change Mitigation and Energy Strategy has set a target of generating 25% of London's energy needs by 2025 locally.

The low carbon economy is worth billions

We want London to be a world leading low carbon capital by 2025. If London can produce just 1% of the low carbon goods and services that are forecast to be needed globally, we will attract £40 billion of investment and create 200,000 jobs over the coming years.
