Mayor's regeneration fund
In August, following the unprecedented disturbances across London, the Mayor announced £70m towards major long term improvements to the damaged town centres and high streets. The fund is focused both on the boroughs affected, and where there is potential to drive growth and prosperity.
The Mayor wants to ensure we maintain the momentum created as repair and rebuilding work begins so that the affected areas are not only restored but are returned as places that are better than before to live, work and invest in.
He will make the most of the investment by ensuring all development contracts bring jobs and apprenticeships to the local area.
Government is contributing £20m of this funding directly to help two of the worst affected areas, Tottenham and Croydon.
On 22 November 2011, the Mayor spoke in Croydon about his programme, and announced he is investing £23m in the borough, alongside the £70m being put in by the council, TfL and other partners. This has already helped secure a major investment from Westfield to redevelop the shopping centre.
The Mayor has been working closely with other affected local boroughs, people and businesses on proposals to create opportunities for new jobs; unlock private sector development and create vibrant town centres. We now want to share some of these proposals which we hope will benefit these communities for generations to come.
