Trafalgar Square, in the heart of London, is one of the city’s most vibrant public spaces. Home to Nelson’s Column, the National Gallery, St Martin in the Field Church and with views down towards Big Ben, the square is rich in history and provides a platform for many of the city’s cultural celebrations. The square is managed by the Greater London Authority and regular festivals, performances and events take place here.
The Mayor of London and Arts Council England, London funds the Fourth Plinth project. This involves a rolling programme of contemporary art commissions which are installed temporarily on the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square.
The Mayor joined forces with organisations across the capital to create a massive celebration of the city's past, present and future. The Story of London is a fascinating and wide-ranging programme, with more than 400 events covering a variety of subjects - history and heritage; art and architecture, design and fashion; music, theatre and film.
A two-day celebration of London’s music education initiated in 2009 and scheduled to take place again in April 2010. Young people were invited to take part in activities from master classes in song writing to playing street piano in public squares.
Big Dance is a celebration of dance in all its styles and forms, and aims to get as many people dancing as possible. It will take place in 2010 and 2012.

This festival shines a spotlight on East London – demonstrating how the area offers a rich creative mix of arts, culture, food and history.
