Steve O'Connell, London Assembly Member for Croydon and Sutton, will today press the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to formally adopt extensions of the tram to Sutton and Crystal palace as part of his transport plan for London. Steve has campaigned extensively for the upgrade and expansion of the tram for his constituents.

London Assembly Conservative members today submitted a report on the August riots which suggests that they were the result of a criminal minority believing they could get away with vandalism and looting because police are ham-strung by politically-correct thinking that deters them from taking necessary action to restore order.

Steve O'Connell, London Assembly Member for Croydon, today got an assurance from the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, that he would look at the present level of police presence on the branches of the Tram, such as New Addington. Steve O'Connell asking a question at the Mayor's Question Time at City Hall, stated that residents had concerns that on the outer branches of the Tram, that they felt on occasion, unsafe.

Steve O’Connell today received confirmation from Boris Johnson that Transport for London is to abandon its plans to axe the 312 bus between the Swan and Sugarloaf and South Croydon Grange.

 

In a letter to Mr O’Connell the Mayor of London says:

 

“TfL has consulted widely on the proposal, and has completed its analysis of the feedback received, and has given consideration to your petition. As a result, TfL will no longer pursue this proposal.”

Steve O’Connell demands Government support for scheme to tackle alcohol-related crimes

Croydon and Sutton’s London Assembly member, Steve O’Connell has called on the Government to back the Mayor’s radical plan to cut alcohol-related crime in London.

 

The Mayor’s idea would see those convicted of drink-related offences reporting twice-daily, possibly a police station, where they would take a breath test; if the test result is negative they keep their freedom, if it shows up positive they go to prison.

Steve O’Connell AM has given his backing a £50 million fund, announced by Mayor Boris Johnson today, to help repair and improve the centre of Croydon, and other highstreets, damaged in the recent riots and looting.

 

The money will be invested in repairing and making larger scale improvements to major centres, like Croydon, to make them better to live, work and invest in.

At today’s meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority, Acting Met Commissioner, Tim Godwin supported Steve O’Connell’s calls for a new anti-drugs campaign highlighting the crimes indirectly funded by drug users.

 

Meeting today at City Hall, Acting Commissioner Godwin said that such a campaign was “a good idea” and that he was happy to support it. He also advised Mr O’Connell to bring this proposal to the Home Office’s attention.

Steve O’Connell petitions Mayor for safe pedestrian crossing in Kenley

 

At City Hall today, Steve O’Connell AM presented two petitions to Mayor Boris Johnson calling for the creation of a safe pedestrian crossing on Godstone Road (A22) between Kenley and Riddlesdown Common.

 

Commenting, Croydon’s London Assembly Member, Mr O’Connell said:

 

“I want to see the Mayor instruct Transport for London to install a new pedestrian crossing on Godstone Road in Kenley.

Croydon’s London Assembly Member, Steve O’Connell has today called on the Government to allow an Enterprise Zone to be created in the borough so it can attract new jobs and businesses.

 

The Zone would offer new businesses that located in Croydon town centre, and several major industrial sites, reduced business rates for five years to make it attractive for firms to set-up there.
