News from Gareth Bacon: Gareth Bacon backs scrapping of Gypsy & Traveller pitch targets

Londonwide Assembly Member, Gareth Bacon has backed the scrapping of targets for gypsy traveller site pitches in Greenwich and Lewisham, under proposals published by Boris Johnson on Monday.

 

Until alterations were published, London boroughs were to be forced to provide new gypsy and travellers sites pitches by the Mayor’s spatial strategy, the draft London Plan; 32 in Greenwich and 15 in Lewisham.

Gareth Bacon AM, at Mayor's Question Time tomorrow, will call on the Mayor of London Boris Johnson, to investigate the feasibility of extending the use of small cameras attached to the body of police officers to record their interaction with the public. It is believed that the equipment could contribute to reducing bureaucracy and complaints against the police by accurately recording what transpires when officers deal with incidents while out on patrol.

London Assembly Member, Gareth Bacon, has today called for the Northern and Jubilee lines to become driverless.

Speaking today, Mr Bacon, who shadows the boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, and Greenwich and Lewisham on the London Assembly for the Conservative Group, urged Boris Johnson to examine and press ahead with the idea.

“Driverless train technology is in operation all over the world. It is safe, efficient and reliable.

“Once the upgrade is completed, the Northern and Jubilee lines will be an automatic system, with drivers reduced to door openers.  

News from Gareth Bacon: "Tokenistic" Olympic wind farm should be scrapped

Gareth Bacon, Environment Spokesman for the London Assembly Conservative Group, has hit out at “tokenistic” proposals to build a mini-wind farm in the Olympic Park that will generate only enough energy to power 310 computers.

Despite the seven turbines reportedly costing the taxpayer £140,000, an environmental impact assessment admits that wind farm is likely to generate no energy at all at night and if there are high winds it will have to be turned off because of noise.

The turbines will generate a mere 0.28 per cent of the Park’s total energy requirements.

News from Gareth Bacon: “Olympic Gridlock” at Blackwall Tunnel is real danger

Gareth Bacon AM, Conservative London wide Assembly Member, has discovered that the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has plans to cordon off half of the Blackwall Tunnel during the Olympic Games for exclusive use by Olympic athletes and officials.

 

They want to reserve one lane in each direction solely for Olympic vehicles.

On an average day, there are usually over 5,000 vehicles every hour travelling through the Blackwall Tunnel.  By contrast, it is extremely unlikely there will be more than 200 Olympic vehicles using the Tunnel each hour.

Gareth Bacon AM has criticised eco-activists for their refusal to make public the location of the so-called climate camp planned for the weekend.

London Assembly Conservative Environment spokesman, Mr Bacon said:

“The organisers of the planned climate protest are thoughtless and irresponsible in their decision to hide the location of the camp from the police and the public.

“This decision is likely to cause unnecessary disruption to the lives of Londoners, and needlessly expend greater police resources which could risk public safety.
