London Assembly member, Brian Coleman said today that half a billion pounds could be saved by merging London’s fire and ambulance services.

 

Speaking as the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA) prepared to examine proposals on the future of the capital’s ambulance service, Mr Coleman, who chairs LFEPA, said:

 

“I believe that up to £500million could be saved by merging London’s fire and ambulance services thus creating blue-light synergy.

Brian Coleman AM has called the employment of 48 full-time trade union activists by Transport for London, the Metropolitan Police Service, the London Fire Brigade and the Greater London Authority, at the cost of £1,354,469 to the taxpayer, “absolutely scandalous”.

 

London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden, Mr Coleman has learned that:

 

  • At Transport for London there are 31 are trade union members who are paid to work full-time on union business at a cost of £879,000 per year.

Following a recent attack in Chalk Farm, where a 21-year-old was found with a gunshot wound, Brian Coleman asked the Mayor what he was doing in response to gang violence in Camden.

“Gang violence is an ever-present concern in London and must be carefully monitored.  Alongside this horrific attack in Chalk Farm, there have been two brutal stabbings in the last three months.

 

News from Brian Coleman: Coleman welcomes new Golders Green Station - Opened ahead of schedule

Brian Coleman, London Assembly Member for Barnet, has welcomed the opening of the new Golders Green Bus station, that was finished ahead of schedule, following a programme of resurfacing improvements. The station is used by 2.5million passengers a year. Originally the works were due to continue for at least three more weeks, but due to the efficient management of the Mayor of London's team and the close monitoring of the process by Brian Coleman, the works finished in record time.

News from Brian Coleman: Coleman seeks Henlys Corner traffic light rephrasing to tackle tail back chaos

Brian Coleman, London Assembly Member for Barnet, held a meeting at the site of the Henlys Corner works to broker a solution to the traffic chaos being caused by the improvement programme. Meeting with Chief Operating Officer of London Streets, Garret Emerson, Brian made it clear that the status quo had to change as many residents were being severely inconvenienced by the long traffic tail backs caused by the works.

At the meeting, Garret Emerson made a commitment to examine the possibility of re-phasing the traffic lights to improve traffic flows.

News from Brian Coleman: Coleman raises anti-Semitic targeted thefts, as £20,000 worth of goods are snatched

At the Mayor’s Question Time today, Brian Coleman, Assembly Member for Barnet raised the issue of targeted burglaries of synagogues, Jewish Schools and Jewish owned premises in Barnet. Items worth £20,000 were snatched from four synagogues, schools and a rabbi’s home. Some of the items stolen included religious artefacts including crowns and candelabras.

Brian Coleman, London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden has praised the recent clampdown on nuisance pedicabs by the West End police. A joint operation was held on 14th April involving the Metropolitan Police, Westminster Council, UK Borders Agency, court appointed bailiffs and other partners. The operation tackled obstruction and riding offences including riding in a manner to cause danger to passengers committed by pedicab drivers, hackney carriage offences and unpaid court fines. Six pedicabs were seized and an arrest was made.

In December last year, Brian asked the Mayor of London to tackle violence at protests saying, “Would there not be a case for tightening up some of the laws around this? For example, surely nobody on a public demonstration needs to wear a mask.”

News from Brian Coleman: Coleman condemns homophobic attack in Camden

London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden, Brian Coleman, has condemned the vicious unprovoked attack by youths of a gay man in Camden on the evening of 13th February. The attack comes after the release of figures in the Evening Standard on 10th February showing a substantial increase of 28% in the number of reports of homophobic attacks over the last four years.
