23 MAY 2012

Jubilee line biggest risk to 2012 transport plans, says Assembly

16 MARCH 2012

The London Assembly Transport Committee has today written to the Mayor to welcome the good progress made on preparing the transport network to cope with the 2012 Games – but some elements of the plans remain a concern[1].

The Jubilee line – a key route to the Olympic Park and other Games venues - continues to be an issue.  Largely thanks to heavily delayed upgrade works, the line suffers regular disruption, and is the only Underground line to see an increase in delays caused by infrastructure failures during the latest published performance period[2].

New report sets out actions to tackle air and noise pollution around a growing Heathrow

14 MARCH 2012

With passenger numbers at Heathrow potentially growing by a third to 95 million a year, road traffic around the airport could increase dramatically - worsening already poor air quality unless urgent steps are taken to improve public transport links, a new report says today.

Plane Speaking by the Assembly’s Environment Committee builds on the Committee’s previous work[2] on environmental conditions around the UK’s busiest – and fastest growing – airport.

City Hall’s approach to treasury management on the agenda

13 MARCH 2012

In a matter of just a few years, the Greater London Authority (GLA) has gone from debt-free to one of the largest public sector borrowers in the UK - with current borrowing of £1.5bn set to more than double by 2014-15, to help fund big projects like Crossrail[1]

Fuel poverty on the rise in the capital, new report warns

13 MARCH 2012

Fuel poverty affects almost a fifth[1] of London households and contributed to 2,500 excess winter deaths last year[2] - and the problem is getting worse, a London Assembly report warns today.

‘In from the cold’ by the Assembly’s Health and Public Services Committee says despite efforts by the government, the Mayor and a range of targeted initiatives and incentives, the number of households affected by fuel poverty increased by more than 19 per cent in just one year[3].

Strategic planning in London on the agenda

12 MARCH 2012

How have the economic downturn and major policy changes shaped the strategic decisions City Hall has made about how London develops?

Against a backdrop of severe constraints on public finances and economic activity, the last Mayoral term has seen a major revision of the London Plan[1] and the publication and subsequent revision of London’s first statutory housing strategy[2].

Do more to help disabled Londoners stay active, says Assembly

12 MARCH 2012

Schools and leisure services need to improve the way they help disabled Londoners stay active, a new report[1] from the London Assembly says today.

The report, by the Assembly’s Economy, Culture and Sport (ECS) Committee, follows up on a 2006 report[2] which highlighted the low level of physical activity among disabled Londoners.

Assembly to quiz transport chiefs on keeping London moving during the Games

12 MARCH 2012

Are plans to ensure London’s transport network copes with the extra pressure of the 2012 Games on track?  What is ‘Plan B’ should the Jubilee line or other key transport infrastructure fail?  And are Londoners and businesses getting the message about how the Games will affect them?

London Assembly Transport Committee Members will tomorrow question 2012 Games and transport chiefs about preparations for one of the network’s biggest ever challenges.

Assembly unanimously condemns McCluskey Olympic strike threat

8 MARCH 2012

The London Assembly has condemned remarks by Unite union leader Len McCluskey suggesting the 2012 Games should be seen as an opportunity to protest against the government.

In an interview with The Guardian on 28 February Mr McCluskey stated “I believe the unions, and the general community, have got every right to be out protesting. If the Olympics provide us with an opportunity, then that's exactly one that we should be looking at.”[1]

Mayor urged to tackle unemployment level head-on

7 MARCH 2012

Urgent leadership is required from City Hall to help deal with the current level of unemployment in the capital, particularly among young people, the London Assembly says today.

A motion agreed by Assembly Members calls on the Mayor to establish a taskforce to coordinate a response and lobby central government for the additional resources needed to equip Londoners and the economy for new opportunities for growth.
