This meeting took place on 2 April 2014. Read the transcript here.
London Assembly Members will tomorrow vote on whether to accept or reject Mayor Boris Johnson’s draft Housing Strategy [1].
Before voting the Assembly will question the following guests about the proposed changes:
- Boris Johnson, Mayor of London
- Richard Blakeway, Deputy Mayor for Housing, Land and Property
- David Lunts, Executive Director Housing and Land
Following legislative changes included in the Localism Act (2011), the Assembly may reject the Mayor’s draft Housing Strategy if two-thirds of Members present vote to do so [2].
London already needs 49,000 thousand new homes annually [3] and with the population set to rise by a million over the next decade the demand for housing is only going to increase.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 2 April from 10.00am in The Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.

- Full agenda papers
- Under the provisions of Section 42 of the Greater London Authority Act 1999 (as amended), the Assembly has the power to consider and potentially reject draft strategies within 21 days of their publication, including the date the draft strategy is laid before the Assembly. The 21 day period from 14 August 2013 ends on 3 September 2013. A draft strategy is rejected if two-thirds of Assembly Members present and vote to do so.
- The Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) has estimated 49,000 new homes are needed every year for the next ten years. However, Savills projects a need for 50,000 new homes annually, whilst London Councils asserts that 80,000 homes are needed annually to meet both the backlog of housing need and demand associated with population growth.
- Darren Johnson AM, Chair of the London Assembly is available for interview, see contact details below.
- As well as investigating issues that matter to Londoners, the London Assembly acts as a check and a balance on the Mayor.
