News from John Biggs (past staff): Biggs urges Mayor “to rethink cuts to fire services in Tower Hamlets”

Created on
14 January 2013

John Biggs has today passed a Petition to the Mayor of London from Tower Hamlets’ residents who are opposed to the Mayor’s plans to cut fire service provision in Tower Hamlets.

Plans announced by the Mayor last week will see Bow Fire Station closed and Whitechapel Fire Station reduced to only one appliance.

In a letter to the Mayor, Local Assembly Member John Biggs said “I share the concerns of councillors and residents at the drastic cuts you are imposing, purely for the purpose of balancing the books. Bow is a heavily built up area and I genuinely fear for the safety of my constituents should any emergency arise. Whitechapel will be left with only one appliance, which I feel is woefully inadequate.I urge you to put the safety of Londoners first and rethink these draconian cuts to these valuable front line services.”
