News from John Biggs (past staff): Mayor of London should not have called in Spitalfields application

Created on
22 June 2012

On 20th June 2012 Labour Assembly Member John Biggs wrote to the Mayor of London Boris Johnson requesting that the Mayor not ‘call-in’ the planning application for the Spitalfields Fruit and Wool Exchange. However the Mayor has now called in the application.

In response to Boris Johnson’s decision to ‘call-in’ the planning application for Spitalfields Fruit and Wool Exchange local Labour London Assembly Member for City & East London John Biggs said:

“Tower Hamlets is not resistant to development. Regarding this site the Councillors, elected to make such decisions, have balanced the strategic needs of London and the Borough against the genuine concerns of the local community. I think they got the balance right. They made a decision, taking into account concerns of over-development and insensitivity to such an important location. I asked the Mayor not to call the application in and I am disappointed that he has done so. The Mayor should not have called in the Spitalfields Fruit and Wool Exchange application. I will continue to support the clear views of my colleagues and the local community.”
