World Squares for All

The World Squares for All study was begun in 1996 by a number of organisations that now form the World Squares for All Steering Group (see membership). This led to the appointment of consultants to undertake the development of a masterplan, whose objective was to redefine the heart of London - specifically Trafalgar Square, Parliament Square and the Whitehall conservation area.

In order to strike a balance between competing pressures, the steering group and consultants embarked upon a wide range of analysis including:

  • Monitoring pedestrian movement
  • Surveying traffic and transport incorporating factors such as noise and air pollution
  • Analysing urban design and the impact of public art within its environment

The client and consultant team led by Fosters and Partners published the World Squares for All Masterplan in 1998.

Trafalgar Square

The successful transformation of Trafalgar Square was the first phase of this regeneration project and was unveiled in July 2003. Further information on the Trafalgar Square transformation project is available.

Parliament Square

The World Squares for All Steering Group published an overview report for the regeneration of Parliament Square - further information on the Parliament Square Improvement project.

Westminster World Heritage Site

The Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey including St Margaret’s Church were inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1987, in recognition of the outstanding universal architectural, historic and symbolic significance of this group of buildings and spaces.

A Management Plan for the Westminster World Heritage Site has been prepared, overseen by a group of organisations including the GLA. It is available to download via English Heritage's website:

It may be downloaded in smaller parts via English Heritage's free publications 'W' page, under 'Westminster'.
