Cycling advice for the Mayor and TfL

Key information

Publication type: General

Publication date:

In December 2014, the London Assembly Transport Committee held a meeting about cycling in the capital. It discussed the design and progress of Transport for London cycling schemes with the Mayor's Cycling Commissioner, Andrew Gilligan, and a number of other expert guests;

Chris Boardman, former Olympic Cycling Champion and Policy Advisor, British Cycling

Michael Welbank, Chair, Planning and Transportation Committee, City of London Corporation;

Iain Simmons, Assistant Director City Transportation, City of London Corporation

Cllr Julian Bell, Leader of Ealing Council & Chair of Transport and Environment Committee, London Councils;

Dr Rachel Aldred, Senior Transport Lecturer, University of Westminster and Chair of Policy Forum, London Cycling campaign

Joe Irvin, Chief Executive, Living Streets

The meeting has formed the basis for a letter to the Mayor of London making five key points:

Cycling in London is still predominantly an activity undertaken by men and white people, and those from a higher social class. Cycling schemes should be judged on how they address these disparities.

The Mayor and TfL need to focus on cycling safety in outer London, where cyclists are less likely to have the protection of greater numbers.

The Mayor and TfL should re-examine proposals for pedestrian waiting times at crossings on new Cycle Superhighways, to ensure the safety of all road users is being taken into account.

Boroughs may lack resources and capacity to deliver aspects of the Mayor’s cycling vision. The Mayor and TfL should consider what additional support they need.

Cyclists need clarity about when they can use new cycle routes that go through the Royal Parks, particularly at night. Alternative routes should be available for times parks are closed.
