Is the Mayor doing enough to help disabled Londoners stay active?

18 JANUARY 2012

Are the Mayor’s plans to get more disabled Londoners involved in sport and physical activity on track? And what will the impact be of expected funding reductions?

The Mayor’s ‘Inclusive and Active 2[1] strategy aims to increase the opportunities for disabled people, and encourage more of them to get involved, yet only 9% currently meet recommended levels of sport and physical activity.

The London Assembly’s Economy, Culture and Sport (ECS) Committee will tomorrow question the following guests about the barriers to sports participation:

  • Simon Cooper, Sports Manager, Greater London Authority
  • Stewart Lucas, Chief Executive, Interactive
  • Michelle Weltman, Disability Officer, London Borough of Newham; organiser, Mini London Wheelchair Marathon; Head Coach, London disability swimming squad, London Swimming
  • Russell Findlay, Chief Executive, London Youth Games
  • Andy Dalby-Welsh, Director of Programmes, Cricket for Change
  • Isabelle Clement, Manager, Wheels for Wellbeing

The meeting will take place on Thursday, 19 January from 10am in Committee Room 5 at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1). Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
