News from Victoria Borwick: Victoria Borwick calls on Mayor to support campaign to save the Royal Brompton Hospital

14 SEPTEMBER 2011

Victoria Borwick, London Assembly Member, today called on the Mayor of London to support the campaign against the flawed proposals to close the children's cardiac unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital. The Mayor gave his full backing to campaigners in their efforts to ensure the hospital retains its paediatric and cardiac units, and made an undertaking to do what he could to supplement the efforts of those already campaigning on the subject. The Mayor recognised the international reputation of the Royal Brompton.

Victoria said:
"The Royal Brompton with Imperial College have just secured £20m from the National Institute for Health Research for the performance of their Biomedical Research Units. These units are at the forefront of research into heart and lung conditions. This development makes it even more ridiculous to be thinking about taking away the cardiac unit. I am pleased the Mayor is sympathetic to the cause being promoted by myself and others, and I hope he can use his position, including his proposed chairmanship of the London Health and Wellbeing Board, to help the NHS see sense on their plans to reduce services at the Royal Brompton"
