News from Roger Evans: Evans takes on illegal minicabs
13 JULY 2011
Roger Evans, London Assembly Member for Havering and Redbridge will today ask the Mayor what is being done to crack down on unlicensed minicabs. Speaking at the Mayor's Question Time at City Hall, Mr Evans will ask what can be done to tackle touts outside major entertainment venues and what the Mayor has planned to raise awareness of the dangers associated with using illegal minicabs.
Roger Evans said:
"I am determined to raise awareness of the dangers related to getting into illegal minicabs, especially the threat posed to women. Unlicensed operators have no obligation to have tax and insurance, and no checks are completed on the background of the drivers. There already is good work being done on this issue, including the creation of the Cabwise text service, which provides the numbers for safe licensed taxi companies. I also welcome the doubling of cab enforcement officers to target illegal drivers. We need to keep up the pressure across London to ensure that there is no let up on these operations, and the need to raise awareness is as important as ever"
