News from Len Duvall: Greener buses for Greenwich
19 NOVEMBER 2007
Hybrid buses are cleaner, quieter and use less fuel than standard diesel buses, leading to a forty per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. A conventional diesel engine works together with an electric motor to power the bus, and energy that would normally be wasted when the vehicle brakes is recycled to power the motor.
The introduction of these new buses is in line with the Mayor’s Climate Change action plan and other environmental strategies. As a symbol of their environmentally friendly status, the buses will be covered in a leafy motif.
Len said: 'This is good news for Greenwich residents who will benefit from new buses which will contribute to our drive to tackle climate change and improve the city’s air, as well as offering passengers in Greenwich a quieter and smoother ride. London's bus fleet is already the cleanest in Britain and these buses are another improvement in the service.'
