News from Andrew Boff: Investigate 20mph speed limit on Blackfriars Bridge, Andrew Boff tells Mayor

20 JULY 2011

In a meeting of the London Assembly today, Andrew Boff AM called on Mayor Boris Johnson to “investigate the advantages and disadvantages of a 20mph speed limit on Blackfriars Bridge”.

Londonwide Assembly Member, Mr Boff’s request came in a debate on the speed limit on Blackfriars Bridge, following the limit reverting to 30mph recently.

He wants to see Transport for London fully investigate the consequences introducing a lower speed limit on the safety of cyclist and drivers, as well as traffic flow either end of the bridge.

Commenting, Mr Boff said:

“I want to see Transport for London fully investigate the impact of introducing a 20mph speed limit on Blackfriars Bridge would have on the safety of cyclist and drivers.

“If there is compelling evidence that a lower speed limit makes the bridge safer then the Mayor should reduce the limit.

“To get the best for cyclist and drivers in London, it is right that speed limits are looked at properly and decisions are made when hard facts are available, but not before.”

The London Assembly Conservative Group has previously refused to support the introduction of a 20mph speed limit on Blackfriars Bridge without clear evidence to suggest that it will improve safety on the bridge.

The Corporation of London is considering plans for the City of London.
