Brian Coleman AM welcomes approval for Jewish cemetery expansion

13 AUGUST 2010

Barnet and Camden's London Assembly member, Brian Coleman, has hailed the Planning Inspector's approval of the expansion of Edgwarebury Lane Jewish Cemetery as a “victory for common sense”.

A planning application for the cemetery's expansion had been rejected by the local planning committee.  However, it was approved by the Planning Inspector on appeal, following a planning inquiry at which Mr Coleman gave evidence in favour of the scheme.

The cemetery serves several Jewish communities including those of Sephardi, Reform, Liberal and Masorti denominations.  However, its current capacity will probably be reached within three to five years.  Although the land is in the Green Belt, cemetery expansion is usually permitted in planning law as an acceptable use of Green Belt land.

Commenting, Brian Coleman AM said:

“On behalf of my constituents in Barnet and Camden I welcome the Inspector’s approval for this vital and urgent expansion of Edgwarebury Lane cemetery as a victory for common sense.

“This cemetery provides an essential service to numerous Jewish communities throughout my constituency, and helps Barnet Council to meet its obligations to residents.  I am pleased to see that its long term future has now been secured.”
