    The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will tomorrow examine the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) draft policing plan for 2012-15 and its budget for the year ahead.

    The policing plan outlines MPS priorities, the performance framework against which it will be judged, and how its budget will be spent.

  • Action needed on childcare costs to stop Londoners being locked out of work, says Assembly

    Action is needed to prevent London parents being locked out of employment because of ‘eye-wateringly high’[1]  childcare costs, a new report[2] from the London Assembly says today.

    Tackling childcare affordability by the Assembly’s Health and Public Services Committee, says childcare costs in the capital are up to a third higher than elsewhere in the UK[3] - an average of £119 a week for a child under two years old.

    Business confidence in London is growing, delivering jobs and strengthening the economy Mayor Boris Johnson said today as he highlighted several major firms who have pledged their commitment to invest in the capital.

    The Mayor particularly welcomed today’s decision by global professional services group Harvey Nash to retain its headquarters in London, following a review which saw the firm considering New York, Dublin, Zurich and Hong Kong as potential new bases.

The call follows a 155%per cent rise in the number of young people out of work for over six months in Barking & Dagenham 

     According to January’s unemployment figures, released on Wednesday, there are now 235,177 people looking for work in London and 7,500 in Barking & Dagenham. This is an increase of 9.5% and 14.1% respectively in the last year alone.

     According to January’s unemployment figures, released on Wednesday, there are now 235,177 people looking for work in London and 11,156 in Tower Hamlets. This is an increase of 9.5% and 9.7% respectively in the last year alone.

  • New trams put Croydon on track for the future

    The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, will visit Croydon today (15 February) to inspect the first of six new trams that are set to join the London Tramlink fleet. The first tram is expected to be in service by the end of the month, and all six by the summer.

     

    A £16.3million investment in the new trams is part of a wider regeneration of Croydon that is being supported by the Mayor including a £23million investment from the Mayor’s Fund, which is being used to help return Croydon to its former glory following the devastation of its town centre in last year’s riots.

    The Mayor, Boris Johnson, has confirmed the delivery of tens of thousands more trees and 11 spruced-up parks as promised to Londoners in his manifesto. He also called for community-minded Londoners to sign up to his Team London tree-planting squad to plant even more trees.

    Local London Assembly member John Biggs today called on Mayor Boris Johnson to get a grip on increasing crime on Tower Hamlets' buses as the latest figures show a 51.61% rise in the last nine months

     The latest figures released by Transport for London show that across London robbery on buses has increased by an average of 18.2%. At the same time figures released by the Metropolitan Police reveal that up to half of the officers who are supposed to police the London transport network are not even in post.

  • “Non, nein, no!”: Mayor slams new EU financial tax plans

    The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has hit out at the nine EU states who have called on the Danish Presidency to speed up the introduction of a damaging Financial Transaction Tax. The Mayor believes the tax would cause serious damage not only to London and the UK but to the future prosperity of the whole EU economy.

     

    The nine member states, which include France and Germany, have sent a joint letter to the Danish Presidency requesting rapid progress with the project.

     

  • News from Murad Qureshi AM: Mayor Boris Johnson “failing to deliver” on flagship home insulation programme

    London Assembly Member and Chair of Environment Committee Murad Qureshi today slammed Mayor Boris Johnson for failing to meet his own paltry targets on insulating Londoner’s homes.

    The criticism follows an announcement from the Mayor that only 40,000 properties have received insulation as part of the RE:NEW scheme. Originally 200,000 properties were to be retro-fitted, the Mayor then reduced this target to 55,000 by March 2012 and now it emerges that only 40,000 have been completed.
