Women in London’s Economy

The Mayor of London’s annual work programme ‘Women in London’s Economy’, now in its fourth year, highlights the important contribution women make to the capital’s economy. It identifies the crucial measures needed to tackle the discrimination faced by women and eliminate the barriers preventing them from participating fully in London’s economic life.

Women in London’s Economy also offers a major forum for London’s women to discuss and examine their place in the economy, as well as an opportunity for employers to demonstrate best practice and forward thinking on women at work.

Women in London’s Economy report

Each year, the GLA produce the Women in London’s Economy report – one of the most comprehensive studies of the position of women in the capital’s economy. The full 2008 Women in London’s Economy report and a summary document are available to download

‘Closing the Gap’ - best practice brochure

Featuring twenty six case studies from twenty two leading companies the ‘Closing the Gap’ best practice guide (published in January 2008) is an invaluable resource for employers seeking to address the many issues women face in the workplace.

Divided into seven sections, the brochure aims to provide examples of practical business-friendly polices that are designed to alleviate the problems experienced by women throughout their working life, from the initial phase of attraction and recruitment through to mentoring and coaching, flexible working and networking to equal pay, to name a few.

‘Mind the Gap’ film

The Women in London’s Economy documentary film ‘Mind the Gap’ was launched by the Mayor at a premiere event in January 2008. The film follows the lives of working women in London and through a combination of interviews, observation and statistics identifies the positives and negative experiences they face today.

By 2016, seven out of ten new London jobs will be filled by women, therefore the issues examined by the film are not just about achieving equality of the sexes but also recognising the increasing importance of women in the London economy. The film is an indispensable resource for all who have a stake in the continued position of London as a world-class city.
