Car users
Car trips account for half of all daily journeys by vehicles in London. Two-thirds of journeys to work in outer London are by car, compared with 12 per cent for central London. Cars will play a continued role in London's transport system - particularly in outer London. Improvements in information on traffic problems and measures to encourage more sparing car use are important.
What has been achieved to date?
- London has achieved a 5 per cent modal shift from cars towards public transport, cycling and walking in the last five years. London is the only city in the world that has moved away from increasing car use.
- The London Traffic Information System (LTIS) provides real time information on traffic problems and incidents via the Transport for London (TfL) website. This includes 'Capital Cams' which provide visual updates of key roads in London at 45 sites.
- TfL has implemented Traffic News, which is updated in real time directly from their London Traffic Control Centre 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This service enables the traveller to quickly see if their intended route is experiencing any delays.
- The information is updated in real time, directly from TfL’s London Traffic Control Centre.
- Pilot car sharing schemes are being set up across London, including a web-based car share scheme that was launched in North London in 2002. By sharing a daily journey you could save around £4.91 per day, that's £1,178.09 a year. For further information on how to join London lift share visit TfL's website.
- Car Clubs are being set up in across the London boroughs with the assistance of TfL. Visit TfL’s website to find out more or visit London Car Clubs to find your nearest car club bays.
- In addition to the aforementioned environmental savings, greener fuels, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles are being promoted.
- Transport for London has been working with the Department for Transport’s Smarter Driving programme Act on CO2. For further information and tips on reducing your CO2 in emissions in London, please visit the TfL website.
