What is the Mayor doing?

The Mayor's proposals for improving London transport are set out in his Transport Strategy. The Strategy is available to download free of charge. A summary of the Mayor's main proposals and current developments is also available.

Key elements of the Mayor's strategy include:

  • Helping to reduce London's impact on climate change. Introducing a CO2 Charge to the central London Congestion Charge Scheme for cars with the highest greenhouse gas emissions and a low CO2 Discount for cars with the lowest.
  • Improving bus services: bus services in London have risen to their highest level since 1965 and passenger numbers have risen to their highest levels since 1945.
  • Making London a city where people of all ages and abilities have the incentive, confidence and facilities to cycle whenever it suits them.
  • Working towards making London one of the World's most walking friendly cities.
  • The Mayor has introduced new initiatives such as the Oystercard - a world leader in Smartcard ticketing.
  • All under-18s in full time education are now entitled to free bus and tram travel. 16-17 year olds at work or who reside outside London can apply for half-fare concessions on a number of fares. Under-11s can travel free on tube, when accompanied by an adult, at all times.
  • Aims to achieve a 40 per cent increase in rail and Tube capacity by building Crossrail, the HackneySouth West Line and the extensions to the East London Line and Thameslink., as well as implementing essential line upgrades.
  • Reversing years of underinvestment: TfL's five-year investment programme covers the whole of London's transport infrastructure.  The investment programme is the result of a ground-breaking agreement with the Government allowing TfL to borrow to get major projects moving.  The PPP is providing over 30 years of sustained investment.
  • Reducing travel demand by influencing the modes of transport used for people and goods, encouraging a modal shift away from cars to more sustainable forms of travel.
  • Advancing the fight for climate change, the Mayor secured investment for the Capital at the 2007 C40 Large Cities Climate Summit.  The intention is to retrofit many of the Capital’s large municipal buildings with energy saving technology (such as solar panels).
