Christmas in the square
All are welcome to attend the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Trafalgar Square on Thursday 4 December, which for many people signifies the start of the festive season. The annual carol-singing programme runs each evening from Monday 8 to Friday 19 December, with most of the organisations taking part raising money for good causes. Mayor Boris Johnson said: 'I can't wait to see the Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree lit up in all its festive glory to mark the countdown to Christmas in London. I’d like to encourage all Londoners and visitors to the capital to come to Trafalgar Square to hear some of their favourite carols throughout December, donate to good causes and get in the mood for Christmas.' Fourth PlinthThe 'Fourth Plinth' in Trafalgar Square is the location for specially commissioned art works - currently Thomas Schütte's Model for a Hotel 2007. Antony Gormley and Yinka Shonibare have been selected from a shortlist of six artists for the next two commissions. Read more about the Fourth Plinth.
