London Sustainable Development CommissionPromoting sustainable development in London
One of the Commission's roles is to champion sustainable development in London. We will do this in a number of ways from highlighting good practice to challenging and encouraging London's councils, businesses, and residents to be more sustainable in all that they do. To help Londoners put sustainable development thinking into practice, the Commission has published a sustainability guide to help implement its London Framework. The Guideis a tool for all organisations to help to plan sustainability into their projects or strategies.Local Area AgreementsOne priority for the Commission is to help London's councils incorporate sustainable development into their Local Area Agreements (LAAs). These establish high-level objectives to drive outcomes at a borough level, funded through pooled resources. In 2005 and 2006 the LSDC hosted seminars for London Borough officers, chief executives and leaders to support the boroughs to embed sustainable development into their LAAs. A pre-seminar report Embedding Sustainable Development into Local Area Agreements (link to PDF file) was published to inform and support officers, chief executives and leaders of London Boroughs. The outcomes from the seminar, Future proofing your LAA (link to PDF file) were summarised in a letter to London borough leaders. A new leaflet, A guide to creating cleaner, safer and healthier communities through your LAAs (link to PDF file) has also been produced to provide real life examples of how sustainable development can be integrated into LAAs. The Commission is continuing to work with other London partners to highlight ways LAAs can be enhanced for the mutual benefit of communities, the environment and the local economy. |
