Planning and sustainable development

London Sustainable Development Commission logo

Buildings and built environment have a major influence on how easy it is for us to live sustainably. Planning for new development is one area in which the Mayor has powers, both in establishing the London Plan which influences the plans (UDPs) of all the London boroughs, and also having the power to direct the boroughs to refuse planning permission to certain types of planning application. The London Plan is itself subject to independent sustainable development appraisal.

In addition to The London Plan, in May 2006 the Mayor published Supplementary Planning Guidance on Sustainable Design and Construction. The GLA is also developing five Sub Regional Development Frameworks.

The Government has published a good practice guide on sustainability appraisal of regional planning guidance and, more recently, guidance for planning authorities on Strategic Environmental Assessments which are required by European Directive 2001/42/EC
