Tomorrow’s Suburbs: Tools for making London more sustainableBest Practice GuidanceThis BPG, published in June 2006, provides additional information to support the implementation of policies relating to suburbs in chapter 2A (Policy 2A.6 Spatial strategy for suburbs) of the London Plan (the Mayor's Spatial Development Strategy). As BPG this document cannot set new policy, but has weight as a formal supplement to the London Plan. The BPG is aimed not only at boroughs, but also at business, community groups and those involved in developing community strategies. The toolkit has been designed as a source of practical information on ways of making London’s suburbs more sustainable, in line with the Mayor of London’s strategies. The BPG consists of one-page toolsheets (in this version there are 67 in total) which provide basic information on a tool and pointers to other relevant sources, the policy context in the London Plan, case studies where the tool has been used and related topics. These are informative, not prescriptive; and since every suburb is different, judgements about which tools could be relevant and what actions may be required can only be determined locally. It does not deal with issues which would be relevant to the whole of London or non-suburban situations, although some of the tools could be used in other parts of the capital. BPG: Tomorrow's Suburbs toolkit PDF Note: A limited number of CD-ROM copies of this BPG are available. ‘Tomorrow’s Suburbs’ was published as a draft toolkit in February 2005 for consultation. Comments received during the consultation have been taken into account in preparation of the final document, which has been produced as a BPG. This BPG will be updated on a six-monthly basis to ensure it stays up to date. Comments for inclusion in the updated versions can be emailed to tomorrowssuburbs@london.gov.uk. This BPG was prepared by URBED (Urban and Economic Development Group) for the GLA, London Development Agency, Association of London Government and Transport for London. Groundwork London has conducted a pilot of the Tomorrow’s Suburbs Best Practice Guidance and the Pilot Report is available for download: Tomorrow's Suburbs pilot report PDF
