Wheelchair Accessible Housing

Best Practice Guidance
September 2007

This Best Practice Guidance (BPG) has been produced to provide advice on how to implement the London Plan policy on wheelchair accessible housing. London Plan policy states that at least 10% of new homes should be designed to be wheelchair accessible or easily adaptable for residents who are wheelchair users.

The London Plan Supplementary Planning Guidance Accessible London lists in an appendix the key features that make a home easily adaptable for wheelchair users. This BPG provides more detail on these key features and includes technical information on how to design homes from the outset that are easy to adapt. The aim is to promote the provision of more wheelchair accessible housing in London and so help to combat some of the discrimination that disabled people experience in finding suitable housing in both the private and social rented sectors.

A draft version of this BPG was published in March 2007 for public consultation, and we have taken note of comments received in preparation of the final document.
