London Home Zones

Home Zones are part of the Mayor's policy to create more child friendly neighbourhoods and to generally improve the quality in life for London's communities.

  • Do you and your neighbours regularly stop and chat in the street?... or is the traffic too noisy ?
  • Do local children meet and play with their friends in your neighbourhood?... or do their parents not let them out because of the traffic and stranger dangers?
  • Is there a bench or landscaped area in your street that encourages older people to come out, socialise and tend to the plants? Or are they too frightened?
  • Is there a regular ‘celebration' or community event in your neighbourhood that brings everyone together?... or do people keep themselves to themselves?

Home Zones could be the way to reverse this situation and London Play's Home Zones for London project aims to show the way. In five pilot areas across the capital it will work with local residents, community groups and local councils to develop plans for new Home Zones.

London Play is working for a capital where all children can play. Home Zones in London will help achieve this, and also contribute to the Mayor's Children and Young People's Strategy and his aim of making London a more child-friendly city.

The principle of Home Zones is that residential streets and neighbourhoods are redesigned to reduce the impact of cars and traffic. This can brighten up the environment and make a better quality of life for everyone. Home Zones also engage local people through consultation and design, providing opportunities to develop and strengthen neighbourhoods and community links.
