The Mayor's Energy Strategy

Front cover of Energy Strategy Energy is central to life in London and the way we use it has huge implications for our environment, for economic regeneration and in terms of social equity. The Mayor's energy strategy, Green light to clean power, aims to minimise the impacts on health and on the local and global environment of meeting the essential energy needs of all those living and working in London. Specifically, it aims to reduce London's contribution to global climate change, tackle the problem of fuel poverty and at the same time promote London's economic development through renewable and energy efficient technologies.

The final energy strategy, 'Green light to clean power', and a summary and a leaflet may be downloaded free of charge.

Policies stated in the energy strategy include the Mayor's support for the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, and the implementation of renewable energy technologies. In April 2002 the London Hydrogen Partnership was launched, to work towards a hydrogen future for London - quiet, efficient and eventually zero-emission energy. In 2003 London Renewables - energy for our future was set up, to inform the adoption of renewable energy targets for London and promote action to meet them.

Consultation

In spring 2002 a draft strategy was sent to the London Assembly and the GLA group organisations for their observations. In January 2003 the public consultation draft of the energy strategy was published. The Mayor asked members of the public and interested organisations for their views on it, via questionnaires and on-line surveys, during the consultation period which ended on 22 April 2003.
