Performers at the 2008 Russian Winter Festival

The Russian Winter Festival is a free event in Trafalgar Square on Sunday
13 January 2008. The following artists will be performing:
Slavyanye
- A professional folk group with an original and cheerful concert programme.
- Repertoire includes all genres of Russian folk music, from lengthy ballads
to traditional rounds, dance melodies to modern Russian folk.
Baikal
- The Buryat National Ensemble Baikal, comprises of a 24-person dance
group and 15-person singing group.
- Baikal Foundation opened in 2003 to sustain and develop Buryat culture
and to provide support for its young people through various sectors: culture,
sport, information and legal support.
Mark Tishman
- Runner-up in the prestigious “Star Factory” Russian show
on the First Channel in Russia.
- Mark’s songs feature at the top of the Russian charts.
National Chechen Dance ensemble “Vainakh”
- Founded in 1939 by one the most celebrated Chechen dancers Vakha Dakashev,
playwright Abdula Khamidov and Vakha Tataev (previous Minister of Culture).
- Most popular dance group in the republic of Chechnya.
- Vainakh have been touring throughout Russia, Europe and Latin America,
and have participated in numerous national dance festivals.
Bianka
- Recipient of a Russian Music Award for her contribution to R’n’B.
- Bianka combines the melodies of Russian folk, complete with balalaika
and accordion, with more standard R’n’B rhythms.
Russian National Dance Show
- Traditional Russian Dance performance.
- Programme unites lyrical sketches with elements of folklore and ancient
Russian epic, whilst preserving the flavour of both Soviet and contemporary
Russia.
- Music performed by the legendary N.P. Osipov Russian National Academic
Orchestra.
Sankt Peterburg
- Formed in 1967 by a student of the Leningrad State University, Vladimir
Rekshan.
- The group’s simple but fresh melodies (somewhere between rhythm
and blues and traditional urban romance) and their aggressive and shocking
behaviour on stage, has singled Sankt Peterburg out on the background
of English-speaking epigones such as the Beatles.
Zemlyane
- This retro band is a group of both the Soviet and Russian era.
- Created by one of the most famous music producers and rock businessmen,
Vladimir Kiselev, in Saint Petersburg in 1978.
- The band still tours Russia, the former USSR countries and gives international
appearances, with hits including “Forgive, Earth” and “Grass
at home”.
Kuba
- The group was born in 2004 on popular Russian TV show “Star
Factory”. Anna Kulikova and Alexandra Balakireva are the lead singers
of the band.
- This energetic girl band is very much loved in Russia, with their songs
always positive and full of energy.
Fabrika
- Russian pop group formed during the making of the popular Russian show
Star Factory, and winner of second place.
- Their performance at the Russian Winter Festival promises a vibrant
compilation of both new and older group hits.
Dima Bilan
- Dima Bilan will once again be headlining at the Russian Winter Festival.
- Dima Bilan has been busy over the last year, with 3 albums that sold
off the shelf and history as MTVs Best Performer of the Year, Best Artist
and award winner at several prestigious international music awards.
Alisa
- The legendary Russian rock band founded in 1983 in Leningrad (aka St
Petersburg).
- The businessman behind Alisa, Konstantin Kinchev, has made it a priority
constantly to maintain the band’s high level of morality, spirituality
and justice.
- Alisa’s creativity is anchored in an open dialogue with the audience
about contemporary reality.
DJ Koreetz
- Resident at Moscow’s top clubs - will perform his most popular
remixes of Russian classics.
- DJ Koreetz is also well known to London public, as he is a frequent
guest DJ in West end London clubs.
