Refugees and asylum seekers in London: a GLA perspective

Refugees are an integral part of London's history, and their presence today offers London a valuable opportunity for the future. As one of its key strategic goals, the GLA must seek to ensure that - nationally as well as regionally - policies are adopted and practical measures are implemented which will enable London to take full advantage of this opportunity. The report Refugees and asylum seekers in London: a GLA perspective, published in September 2001, offers a factual and analytical basis on which the Mayor and GLA can begin to judge what those policies and practical measures should be.

What steps can the Mayor take to make sure the arrival of refugees and asylum seekers becomes - and is understood as - an opportunity for London? The report analyses what is currently known about refugees and asylum seekers in London and seeks to inform recommendations that would help the capital move towards this goal.
