The London Climate Change Adaptation Strategy

August 2008

London Assembly and Functional Bodies Consultation Draft

Climate change presents two challenges: reducing our greenhouse gas emissions to avoid dangerous ‘runaway’ climate change, and adapting to those impacts that are now inevitable. Climate change means that London is expected to experience warmer, wetter winters and hotter, drier summers, with more extreme weather (heatwaves, tidal surges and heavy rainfall) and rising sea levels. These changes will increase the risk of floods, droughts and heatwaves, which will affect the prosperity of the city and the quality of life of Londoners. Anything that is affected by the weather will be affected by climate change.

The draft London Climate Change Adaptation Strategy identifies the key risks to London and Londoners and prioritises the actions necessary to manage those risks.

This draft, published in August 2008, is for consultation with the London Assembly and the functional bodies. A revised draft will be published for public consultation early in 2009.
