New powers for London

The Greater London Authority (GLA) was established by the GLA Act 1999. Additional powers for the Mayor and the GLA were announced by the Department of Communities and Local Government on 13 July 2006; a second piece of legislation, the Greater London Authority Act 2007 received Royal Assent in October 2007.

The GLA Act 2007 supplements and updates the GLA Act 1999 and grants the Mayor of London and the London Assembly new powers. These give the Mayor new lead roles on housing and adult skills in London; a strengthened role over planning in the capital; and additional strategic powers in a wide range of policy areas including waste, culture and sport, health, climate change and appointments to the boards of the functional bodies.

The Government’s policy statement and related documents including a summary of responses to the consultation which ended in early 2006 are available at: http://www.communities.gov.uk/glapowers.
