The 2012 Olympic Games and sustainabilityHosting the Olympic Games will improve the lives of all Londoners. The aim of the Olympic bid team and the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, is to make sure the Games provide long-term benefits as well as a spectacular event in summer 2012. In August 2003, the Mayor launched his Green Compact, which identified key achievements that would make the London Games the most environmentally sustainable in history. In the run-up to the Games, construction and other preparation activities will bring new employment opportunities, many of which will be focused in or near the Olympic zone in east London. During the Games themselves, thousands of exciting and high-profile volunteering opportunities will help give Londoners the skills and the confidence they need to improve their employment prospects. Winning the bid means that many improvements will be made to London much earlier than scheduled. These fast-tracked changes would make London better for residents, businesses and visitors alike, and include strengthening the transport infrastructure, enhancing the physical environment, developing many new homes and creating world-class sports facilities. The London 2012 Games will accelerate plans to revitalise and regenerate a neglected part of London and also encourage London’s eastward expansion. London 2012 would boost the capital's tourist industry before, during and after the actual gaming events, and would also bring new jobs across the whole of the city.
