Health Inequalities Strategy

Supporting evidence and reports

The Mayor of London at the launch of the Reducing Health inequalities issues for London and priorities action paper.

On 2 August 2007, the report Reducing health inequalities - issues for London and priorities for action paper was launched, setting out the Mayor’s initial thinking on health inequalities. It identifies high-level areas where he proposes action, and reflects stakeholder input received to date.

Mapping for the Health Inequalities Strategy: National, regional and local context, strategies and activities

The majority of health and social care policy has some angle or focus on the determinants of health. An extensive mapping exercise was undertaken to identify the key areas of strategic activity that provide the most opportunity to tackle health inequalities in London. This mapping report brings together work that was undertaken at a national, regional and local level. The report details:

  • The context for action on health inequalities - relating primarily to relevant legislation and policy
  • Key roles relevant to health inequalities and current and planned activity
  • Gaps and opportunities in existing and planned activity relating to the key determinants of health inequalities and/or communities affected by health inequalities.

The accompanying templates provide the detail of the mapping and analysis that was undertaken at a regional level.

Review of evidence for the Mayor’s Health Inequalities Strategy

We are developing an evidence base on health outcomes, lifestyle factors, access to services and the wider determinants of health that impact on people and places, together with the various dimensions of inequality (age, sex, socio-economic factors, geography etc.). It includes findings from reports on health inequalities, evidence from papers on social epidemiology, and a range of reports on the wider determinants of health. The evidence base also attempts to document ‘what works to reduce inequalities’ and to highlight highlights gaps in current knowledge. There will be an ongoing exercise of adding to, and extending, the evidence base as new and updated information becomes available. The attached report, based on the current evidence, is intended to underpin the Issues and Options paper and draft strategy.

Commentary on written submissions in response to the GLA’s ‘Call for Evidence’ on health inequalities

Six hundred organisations were written to help the Mayor build a detailed picture as possible of the needs, priorities and experience of all London’s communities. Thank you to all individuals and organisations that responded to this. The evidence submitted was immensely valuable and has informed the report Reducing health inequalities – issues for London and priorities for action and will continue to shape the Mayor’s draft Health Inequalities Strategy. The attached is a commentary on the submissions main issues, cross cutting themes and interventions.

Health Inequalities Community Outreach Project

A community outreach programme was undertaken to gain deeper insight into the factors that affect the health and well being of London’s communities. It also centred on identifying and understanding community based interventions and activities that have been successful in addressing health inequalities. The focus was on collecting evidence from groups and organisations that may not necessarily see the evidence that they collect, routinely or otherwise, as relevant or indeed valuable in a broader sense. In addition, the focus has been on those groups and organisations that do not usually have access to channels and networks where their evidence can be more widely articulated.
