Race Equality Scheme 2005-2008

London is the most ethnically diverse city in Europe, with 300 languages spoken, over 14 faiths practiced and 42 communities of over 10,000 people born in countries outside Britain living in the city.

London is also a city of great contrasts with the some of Britain's richest and poorest areas located within the capital. Minority ethnic communities tend to suffer disproportionately from poverty, ill health, unemployment and educational underachievement. It is into this context that the Greater London Authority (GLA) is publishing its second Race Equality Scheme, for 2005-2008. (The GLA's first Race Equality Scheme was published in May 2002.)

The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 requires that all public authorities, like the GLA, publish a Race Equality Scheme. The GLA's Scheme sets out what the Mayor of London plans to do to:

  • Eliminate unlawful racial discrimination
  • Promote equality of opportunity and
  • Promote good relations between people of different racial groups.

The GLA's Race Equality Scheme is a three-year plan that summarises what the Authority intends to do over the medium term to promote race equality in London. The scheme is available in full, summary and easy read versions to download.
