Equality and Diversity - What is the Mayor doing?
The Mayor believes that, whatever your religion, race, sex, age, disability or sexuality, you should be able to live your live free from discrimination. Leading London's equality agenda is a key aim and lies at the heart of all the work that is undertaken at the GLA. Each year the Mayor publishes an Equalities report - available from the publications page - reporting on progress in achieving this aim.
- The Mayor of London hosted a range of events and activities to
mark the European Year of Equal Opportunities
for All in 2007
- The Mayor has responded to the Interim Report of the government's
Equalities Review: while welcoming its aims, he has very
serious concerns over the Review's Interim Report
- capitalwoman - an
annual conference for London's women
- Disability Capital -
a major initiative by the Mayor focusing on the civil rights
of disabled people in London
- Refugees and asylum seekers -
the Mayor took on responsibility for strategic leadership of refugee
integration work in London in April 2006, and in July 2007 published
London Enriched, his draft strategy for refugee integration
in London
- State of Race Equality in London -
this conference is your chance to question London's leaders and
decision makers on their efforts in combating racism and racial
inequality in London
- The Mayor's Strategy
for children and young people aims to make London a more child-friendly
city
- The Mayor has set up Reporting
Asylum - the local press awards to recognise good practice
in coverage of refugee and asylum issues
- Valuing Older
People, the Mayor's Older People Strategy aims to challenge
stereotyping of older people and provide a framework to develop
a city in which older Londoners have the support they need to
lead active, healthy and independent lives
- The
London Older People’s
Resource Facility offers free computer services, desk space
and GLA officer support to older people’s organisations
and individuals
- Rise festival -
Rise (previously respect) is London's top free music and dance event,
celebrating the capital's diversity and promoting anti-racism in
a day-long festival. Founded in 1996 by the Trades Union Congress,
it has gone from strength to strength with the Mayor's involvement,
and now a number of complementary events take place during Rise
week, leading up to the festival
- The Mayor organises many other conferences
and cultural events that promote equality and celebrate London's
diversity
- London Partnerships Register -
the Mayor pioneered the principle of equal rights for same sex and
different sex unmarried couples through the establishment in 2001
of the London Partnerships Register - the first of its kind in Britain
