Recycle for LondonRecycle for London, part of the national Recycle Now initiative, campaigns to encourage Londoners to recycle more. Londoners produce 3.4 million tonnes of rubbish a year, which is enough to fill Canary Wharf tower every 10 days. Yet waste analysis has found that 60 per cent of what we throw out could be recycled. Despite this, the problem is getting worse as we buy more packaged and disposable goods. The Recycle for London campaign was launched in 2003, and is designed to provide a simple, single London-wide message to Londoners to increase awareness and participation in recycling. The campaign also provides communication support to all London’s 33 boroughs. The Recycle for London campaign is now calling on Londoners to aim to recycle three times more rubbish. The new advertising depicts an annoying bin bag that is looking to be fed with all types of household rubbish. The adverts encourage Londoners to ‘starve their bins’, and instead feed their recycling box or bag. Speaking at the launch of the advertising, the Mayor highlighted that “The gulf between what Londoners say they are recycling and what is required is still huge. In London we are recycling just over 20 per cent of our rubbish, yet when we asked Londoners if they are recycling, 93 per cent of people said they are recycling paper and 90 per cent say they are recycling glass all the time.” Recycle for London also works with the 33 London boroughs to help spread the campaign message at a local level.
