The Mayor's Waste Strategy

London produces about 18 million tonnes of waste every year. Of this, 4.2 million tonnes is collected by the London boroughs, mostly from households and some from businesses and is called municipal waste.

If waste continues to grow at its current rate, there will be twice as much to deal with by 2020. We cannot allow this to happen. The Mayor’s Vision for Waste in London is that by 2020, municipal waste should no longer compromise London’s future as a sustainable city.

The Mayor's Municipal Waste Management Strategy was published in September 2003. The Strategy contains policies to manage London’s waste through to 2020, however the proposals to implement the policies are generally focused on the period through to 2005/06. The strategy is being reviewed in 2007.

Management of the 13.8 million tonnes of non-municipal waste produced in London is addressed in the Mayor's draft Business Waste Strategy.
