Street Trees
Trees and woodlands are good for Londoners, good for visitors to London, and good for business in London. The Mayor of London committed to funding new street trees in his election manifesto, as part of his goal to make London a greener city, and confirmed this intention after he was elected in May 2008. The aim is to plant 100-400 trees per area in the 40 areas that would most benefit from the social, economic and environmental improvements that new street trees provide. A panel chaired by the charity Trees for Cities has identified the priority areas, all of which will have new street trees planted by the end of the four-year Mayoral term. Over 1,400 trees have already been planted in 10 London boroughs in the first year of the scheme. GrantsThe Mayor’s Street Trees programme is an expansion of the Forestry Commission's London Tree and Woodland Grant Scheme and will run until 2012. Residents’ groups, community organisations, charities and boroughs can apply for the grants. To view the maps showing the priority areas, and for information on how to apply for a grant relating to this scheme, visit the London Tree and Woodland Grant Scheme website. Trees and woodlands in LondonThe Mayor and the GLA are pleased to be working with other partners such as the Forestry Commission to maintain and enhance London’s trees and woodland as a vital part of the environment of Greater London. Highlights of other projects and links to partners’ websites are available on the Partners and Projects page. The Mayor’s London Tree and Woodland Framework (published in 2005) provides a strategic approach to trees and woodlands that delivers the Mayor’s vision for London and the relevant Mayoral Strategies within the context of the government’s Strategy for England’s Tree, Woods and Forests.
