Air quality - leading by example

The Mayor aims to lead by example in reducing pollution. The Mayor's Air Quality Strategy sets out a series of measures the Mayor is taking to ensure that pollution caused by the activities of the GLA group is minimised.

These measures include:

  • introducing the Mayor’s Taxi Emission Strategy to reduce emissions from licensed taxis
  • supporting TfL’s trials of three zero-emission fuel cell buses in London
  • continuing to improve the Transport for London (TfL) London bus fleet, so that it is the cleanest in the UK. The Mayor is committed to all 6,400 vehicles will be a minimum of the Euro II vehicle emissions standard with a particulate trap (a particulate trap reduces emissions of PM10 from each vehicle by 95 per cent) by the end of 2005.
  • trailing the use of water-diesel emulsion fuel in TfL London buses, which can reduce the emissions of NOx dioxide by 13 per cent
  • developing further measures to expand and improve public transport in London, enabling people to change from car travel to less polluting means of transport
  • rejecting the use of a Mayoral car, encouraging Greater London Authority (GLA) staff to travel to work by public transport, cycling or walking and providing a travel plan to assist GLA staff in using the most sustainable forms of transport for all work-related purposes
  • ensuring that the GLA group adopts green purchasing policies and encouraging environmental best practice from all companies that the GLA has a contractual relationship with.
  • The Mayor will use the profile of his office to raise awareness of the problems of air quality and to promote solutions. In many cases, promotional campaigns will be undertaken in partnership with other organisations.
  • The Mayor will use his influence over the boroughs and the planning system
