The London Child Poverty Commission

The London Child Poverty Commission is an independent body set up by the Mayor of London and the Association of London Government in February 2006.

London Child Poverty Commission Launches Final Report - Capital Gains

The London Child Poverty Commission final report 'Capital Gains' summarises the Commission’s findings on the challenge facing London in tackling child poverty and sets out our recommendations, based on two years of research and consultation. It builds on the Interim Report published in September 2007.

Poverty in London

In spite of the wealth and opportunities generated by London’s dynamic economy, disadvantage and inequality mean that over half a million of London’s children - 41 per cent - live in poverty. There are unique and complex issues that lie behind London’s high child poverty rates. As such, the Commission seeks to address London’s unique needs, identify best practice and devise effective policy solutions.

Targets

Central government has set national targets for halving child poverty levels by 2010 with a view to eradicating child poverty by 2020. Part of the Commission’s work will report on the capital’s progress towards the Government’s child poverty targets.

Commission membership

In consultation with Carey Oppenheim, the Commission Chair, the Mayor and the Association of London Government appoint members of the Commission. The Commissioners and Chair will serve for two years in the first instance.

The Commissioners include representatives from diverse backgrounds: voluntary and statutory sectors; business; policy and research; academia; regional and local government and trade unions. As such, the Commission has a great deal of expertise and interest in poverty and related issues.

Website

The London Child Poverty Commission website, www.londonchildpoverty.org.uk, will provide information about the commission, facts on child poverty, research, events, contact and useful links to websites with information on child poverty and related matters.
